Driven to Abstraction
July – Aug 29, 2024
Driven to Abstraction is a literal journey that I have taken from my early artistic endeavors to my professional representation in Chelsea, New York City.
In high school, when I realized that I simply couldn’t connect to what was happening in chemistry class, I would sketch images on the edges of my notebook.
After eventually graduating with a fine arts degree from WVU, I went a summer without work. I needed to make money so I finally landed a job doing advertisements for a television station. I hated this and decided that I wouldn’t do any more artwork in the future. I spent the next couple of decades producing, directing, and editing for television. After work, I would go home and sketch with graphite to unwind.
I was tired of seeing representational art that I could walk outside and see with my own eyes. This led me to an insistence on producing both abstract and surrealistic imagery. Things that no one had ever seen before.
In 2006 I was reinspired to produce art for myself using oils on canvas. My first showing was in SoHo, NYC, where I received a Grand Jury Award. I’ve been painting with conviction ever since.

Influenced by his great-grandfather, the original Harry T. Burleigh, a renowned baritone, Harry T. Burleigh III embarked on his artistic journey exploring his unique style and techniques. As an artist, graphic designer, screenwriter, and musician, Burleigh draws from his abundant creativity and imagination. Applying traditional and contemporary practices, he works with oil, acrylic, mixed media, and digital imagery on canvas.
Burleigh combines surrealistic and abstract images while listening to music that complements his inspiration. His pieces are unplanned, with no preliminary sketches. Once he applies paint to the canvas, he lets the brush dictate the direction of the piece. The process is as crucial as the outcome, which he describes as deeply personal and meditative. His sinuous and lively imagery invites viewers to interpret it in their own way.
Burleigh graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. His work has been exhibited on building exteriors in New York City, Los Angeles, Monaco, and the London Tube. His newer paintings will be featured in the Fall 2024 issue of ArtTour International Magazine, which celebrates the dynamic fusion of fashion and art at New York Fashion Week, and in a month-long in-flight exhibition with Vueling Airlines in July 2024.
