The Ottoman Gaze
Sept 14 – Oct 14, 2025
The Ottoman Gaze series reflects a creative process that reinterprets the past through the visual language of today. Cultural memory is treated as a layered structure, where each brushstroke, digital pixel, and stylized form becomes part of the dialogue between history and the present.
Symbols of the Ottoman aesthetic universe such as the tulip, the coffee cup, and the caftan are reimagined through contemporary illustration techniques and visual culture. The artist constructs a surreal historiography by expressing historical processes with visual metaphors. Exaggerated proportions, distorted perspectives, and unexpected compositions serve as the core elements of this narrative. Identity appears as a dynamic and constantly reconstructed process, and each artwork stands as a record of this ongoing transformation. Rather than idealizing the past, the series critically re-examines it, aiming to uncover the multilayered connections between Ottoman heritage and contemporary life. Everyday objects such as coffee cups, tulips, and traditional garments are elevated into the artistic context, emphasizing the accessibility of visual expression. It’s positions Turkish art within the global context as an original synthesis neither an imitation of Western aesthetics nor a rigid repetition of tradition. Each work calls the viewer to active interpretation.

Hülya Demir is a contemporary artist and illustrator who continues her academic career as an Associate Professor in the Department of Graphic Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Ondokuz Mayıs University.
Demir’s artistic production is grounded in the practice of reinterpreting cultural memory through a contemporary visual language. By constructing reference systems between the past and the present, she builds original visual narratives that layer historical contexts with postmodern and surreal approaches.
Her body of work titled “Ottoman Series” presents the most distinctive examples of her artistic identity. In this series, the artist synthesizes historical symbols and everyday objects with contemporary illustration techniques, re-coding traditional iconography and developing a unique visual language.
Demir’s aesthetic approach is characterized by exaggerated figure proportions, masterful use of stylization techniques, and strong metaphorical constructions. Her interdisciplinary practice generates a multidimensional academic and artistic discourse in the fields of graphic design, illustration, and visual culture studies.
Represented in both national and international exhibition platforms, Demir’s works contribute significantly to ongoing discussions on cultural memory, identity representations, and contemporary aesthetic paradigms.
